I ran across this quote from Martha Graham, the iconic dancer who died in 1991, aged 96:
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all this, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”
It’s so powerful, the idea that each of us is a treasure that will never be duplicated, and if we don’t allow ourselves to shine, that gift is lost to the collective, forever. All of us matter!
At Psychic Horizons Center, we’re dedicated to finding out who we really are, as spirits in bodies. Only then, can we truly shine our light and bring in the gifts we have come here to share. Those gifts can be big and profound, resulting in fame and fortune, or they can be as simple as saying something that helps another person believe in themselves. What’s in between runs the gamut, but the common denominator is when a person taps into their certainty and creates something out of their knowingness. A work of art, a relationship, an avocation, community – the list goes on. Sometimes, we end up doing the thing that becomes our gift, without setting out to do so. We feel an urge, we follow a path and we shine our light whether we intended it consciously, or not. Because we have been led to the truth of our highest expression.
Some people come in with tremendous knowingness of who they are and why they’re here on Earth. For the rest of us, there’s self-discovery! That’s our specialty, at Psychic Horizons Center. We help people move out energies that don’t belong to them; opinions, beliefs and actions that have accumulated throughout this and other lifetimes and which end up informing who we are, for better or worse. We all collect energy but the good news is, uncomfortable energy that holds us back usually isn’t ours, and can be let go. The act of letting go clears out space for us to settle into ourselves in a new way. We become more clear, more neutral, more present in the moment. More available to each other and the earth.
I especially love this part: “you do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.” Not because I think we’re all wandering around wondering what in the world we’re doing—or that we should—but because the journey to believing in ourselves begins when we realize, on some level, that we don’t. When we’re confused, or in doubt, when we’re giving away power to others, when we live our lives reacting to our circumstances. It’s human nature to strive to become more energetically comfortable. To gain confidence, to take risks, to grow.
It’s completely okay to not believe in oneself. It’s why we tell our new students, “If you feel like you’re making things up, keep going!” or, “Just open your mouth and start talking, the reading will follow.” It’s why my teacher David used to say, “It doesn’t matter if the person you’re reading gets it or not – somebody somewhere is getting a healing.”
The path to believing in ourselves is loaded with opportunities to doubt, to be uncertain, to make mistakes. It’s a practice! We’re not pre-programmed to get everything right. We’re supposed to get stuff wrong; that’s how we grow. The more we go out and try things, whether we’re good at them or not, the more we start to see the energies that are in our way and how they mostly aren’t ours. We begin to recognize our truth and what doesn’t serve us.
You were born with your own unique expression. Indeed, without you there would be an empty place in the collective consciousness; we might not have known you, but we would miss you. You’re here for a reason and we are waiting for the promise that is you. We’re rooting for you to find your voice, your expression, your light. You might not know it, but if you are in our programs, you are moving in the direction of that expression, every class and workshop and meditation bringing you closer and closer to the truth of who you are as a Spirit.
At the same time there’s no rush. It might take you a year, or a decade, or a lifetime to realize the Self. Or you might come back another time, in a different body, to work on it some more. It’s okay, we’ll wait!
But there’s also never been a better time to start the search, or to continue it. The planet is in need of more and more people seeking their light, their expression, their highest vibration.
