Many people begin the new year with a goal to lose weight or get into shape. This is a great goal and can be a way to take charge of your life. But instead of listening to a rote path that is set up for everyone, how about sitting down with your body and seeing how it feels about your plan?
Our bodies are set up to adapt to whatever is happening around us, and they do a great job of keeping us well most of the time. It’s miraculous really! But your body feels and heals much better if you just work with it. Here are a couple of examples: Ask the body how much of your chocolate bar it wants or needs versus just mindlessly eating the whole thing. And this is the same with pizza, ice cream or the pad thai!
When you check in with the body, you get an instant response that is easy to follow. It is usually because we are zoned out that we miss the clues! The trick is staying grounded or connected to the earth. ( Imagine an energy connection from the base of your spine to the center of the earth. This can be like a redwood tree, an anchor and chain, or a beam of light. Energy isn’t fussy!) When you, the spirit, are in your body, you become more aware of everything around you, especially your own self and thus your preferences.
Next time you eat, take a minute to bring your food in harmony with you. Bless it and then ask the body how much would be the right amount for you. It’s never hard, we just get pulled away and distracted into Facebook, television, phone calls or other people. Take a moment to breathe and just be present to yourself. Your body will thank you and you will find it much easier to meet your goals. Enjoy the spring and celebrate the body you have. You picked a good one!
