OK, I’m joking – a little. Does it help my intuition when I feel mentally sharper, less achy and inflamed? You bet! I have more energy, better focus and I’m lighter in my body. Less physical distraction means easier psychic connection. So what is this diet I’m talking about?
A Ketogenic diet is based on eating plenty of healthy fats along with low carb fruits and veggies and moderate amounts of protein. Ketosis is the state where your body is using fat for fuel rather than sugars (what carbohydrates become during digestion.) Around 70% percent of calories on the Keto diet come from good organic fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, nuts, bacon, eggs, butter etc.), 20 to 30% from organic, grass-fed protein and 5 to 10% from non-grain, non-starchy carbohydrates.
It takes about four days for the body to switch over to using fats for energy, but after the initial challenge I have found I eat less and go longer between eating as I no longer experience the ups and downs of the blood-sugar roller coaster. The Internet has lots of info on how to figure out what to eat (known as your macros) and many supportive forums can be found on social media. I also recommend watching The Magic Pill documentary available on Netflix.
Success on Keto depends on education and dedication. Learn about it before you jump in, then prepare and commit. Contrary to rumors, it is not a high animal protein diet. I know some Keto Vegans though it takes some research to get balanced plant proteins without corn, beans and grains. Good vegan fats are plentiful, though, which is a big part of their success.
Following Keto teaches me a lot about the programming and habits in my relationship with food. Letting go of grains and breads taught me how much I rely on food for comfort, and releasing that pattern helps me choose berries and nuts, or half an avocado with homemade pesto and feel just as happy. It also helps me let go of competitive energy; some people lose lots of weight rapidly and some like me take longer, so I’ve moved out of comparing and instead I pay attention to how much better I feel!
Keto is the most popular diet in the world right now for a reason. People are losing weight and gaining health, getting off pharmaceuticals, experiencing mental clarity and enjoying life again. It’s a “people’s movement” way of eating with no corporate affiliation and supported by a grass-roots community that is beyond generous in sharing tips, recipes, victories and rooting for each other. It’s a good health option for body, mind and Spirit!
