What is often stopping us are the stories we’re telling ourselves. All human beings are motivated by two things— avoiding pain and feeling pleasure. Everything we do is for a feeling. We make money to feel secure, powerful or taken care of. We eat to nourish our bodies and feel energetic or stuffed and comfortable. We are in a relationship to feel loved, safe or both. But sometimes, it’s time to make a change. But if we don’t know why we should make a change or really have a clear sense of what that will mean, we will avoid it. On some level we think there will be pain involved. If you want to motivate yourself or someone else to make a change, take a look and see what is the purpose of that change. How will you feel once that change is implemented? Will you feel relieved, secure, powerful, happy or complete? Really take a look and find the feeling you will have. Now look at getting there. What are you telling yourself? You might have to make several shifts, or leaps of faith, but what pictures are you giving yourself? For example, one person’s story for getting in shape can be pain, starvation and sore muscles. For another it may be enjoying fresh energizing foods, moving and strengthening their body and feeling great. It’s the same with money, relationships, careers, everything. We may not have pleasure, but at least we are avoiding what we think would be pain. Ask yourself if you would like to rewrite some of those stories. Look at what you get to do, not what you have to do. You don’t have to create it with pain. How about adventure, creativity and fun? We can empower ourselves and change our lives simply by what we tell ourselves. That’s something to think about. -Rev. Krista Socash Rev.
