Having Your Space

A  friend gave me a quote the other day - "When you want God as much as a drowning man wants air, that's when realization comes." - Rabindranath Tagore

I've had a similar thought - when finding your own space and truth is as urgent as finding a toilet when you have Montezuma's Revenge, then you know you've moved a big chunk of unnecessary energy out of your space and are on the way to having your life!

OK, it's not the most pleasant metaphor! Another way of describing that need is the feeling when you have to get out of a crowded, noisy, bar and into the cool night air. You just want your space back; the bar atmosphere became too over-whelming.

The same thing happens as we live daily life. We're overloaded with all the energys we encounter - work, family, world affairs - then add to that our inner fears and issues, and it's easy to see how we can lose touch with the awareness of who we really are.

Earlier in my life it was more urgent to do everything I could to avoid being in this body and present with myself. There was too much pain and too much energy that I felt helpless to.

Foreign energy in our space makes us feel helpless because we can't heal other people's problems. It takes honesty with ourselves to reach a space of being able to sit with ourselves and learn to discern fact from fiction in our space.

Energys from others can trick us into thinking we are ugly, powerless, or not senior in our life. The person ready to study art quits because someone has programmed them into thinking it's not practical. People believe they're not attractive because they don't look like a movie star. Or, a person is diverted from their spiritual path because of programming that says God is separate and judgmental.

When you decide to explore within, you see what you need to learn about yourself, the positive and the negative. Learning to meditate and self heal allows you to do this in a safe way. Eventually, the need to clear your space and have your certainty, wisdom and sense of God within becomes as important as the air you breathe or that toilet!

We learn coping mechanisms to deal with the feeling of being overloaded. We become so full of foreign energy that we get pushed out of our body and aren't in our vehicle to guide it on the path that suits us best. Diversions can include alcohol, TV, or keeping busy so we're constantly ahead of ourselves and unable to deal with the present moment.

It's truly wonderful choosing to know you're a spirit in a body. I choose to be present with myself so I don't miss even the smallest experience of this world - watching a bird and hearing it's song, pausing to smell a flower - all my senses aware. Being present with myself allows me to follow my life's plan in joy and with choices, versus randomly or based on someone elses' concepts. I'm more present as a friend, teacher, and happy in my time alone as well. Where is the God/Goddess in you? Your truth? What does being you really feel like? Enjoy the journey!
