by Hope Hewetson We are in resistance when we experience something and immediately want it or the person to go away-NOW. For example, we may feel the start of an illness. Usually we resist it. We decide it's bad to be sick, inconvenient, and we don't want it. We build a wall against it, trying to push it away. We're perpetuating the energy that attracted the illness to us in the first place. We're fighting it, creating a blockage and trapping the resonance of the illness within us, instead of releasing to a flow and allowing the energy to continue on its path. When we think we have to accept something in order to heal it, it doesn't mean we're in agreement to suffering or asking for more of the same discomfort of the situation or illness. Acceptance means we're in agreement to seeing what part of the process this illness is playing in our life in that moment. If our first reactions are curiosity instead of fear and anger, the results of the illness will be really different. This is the same in all situations where we go into resistance. If you are single and are in resistance to being so, it will take longer to meet someone. Notice what being single does for you now, and honor that. Let the part that wants to get you stuck in resistance to being single go. You are in a process. The more permission you have to flow through life, in nonresistance, the easier things are. We learn about resistance all the time. We resist traffic cops, our bodies, taxes, death, changes at the airport, money, our parents, bosses, the list is endless! I chuckle now, but not always! I thought about resistance this morning while walking and seeing the spring bulbs bursting through the soil. I thought about the bulbs sitting in the earth all winter, full of certainty. Nothing will stop it's journey towards the sun. There is nothing in the bulbs existence that says it can't grow and blossom. We're a little more complex than a bulb, but not by much. Instead of being created with a steadfast plan of existence like the plants and animals, we were granted free will. I read recently in a book about Jesus that "kindness is the right use of will." That's a pretty simple plan for our free will, one that can be applied to our bouts of resistance. The next time you find yourself in a situation where you go into resistance, try some kindness, especially towards yourself! Remind yourself that you have some options around how to feel in the situation. Sometimes, I have to allow myself a small amount of time to blow off some steam and frustration about a person or situation. Then, I take all that steam and apply it in a different way. I breathe, ground to Mother Earth and look around and see what the vibration of kindness does to the energy that's against what's happening. Kindness allows us to validate the energy that's flowing with the process, leading us to the sun and our enthusiastic bloom. Sure beats feeding the wall of resistance! -Rev. Hope Hewetson
